2009 Corvette ZR1: First Drive

The 2009 Corvette ZR1 is the best car ever made. It redefines what performance cars are capable of, not by its numbers (the 0-to-60 in 3.3 seconds and a 205 MPH top speed figures are no longer noteworthy north of $100,000), but by how it makes those numbers so accessible. Simply put, the ZR1's most remarkable achievement is how easy and unintimidating the chassis makes exploiting the car's 638 HP. The only problem is I'm not good enough a driver to fully do so.

Motive First Steer: 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

FROM MOTIVEMAG.COM: The number of production cars with 600-plus horsepower can be counted on less than two hands, and none of them - with the exception of the Bugatti Veyron or the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG - are as refined or as easy to drive as the Corvette ZR1.

2009 Honda Fit, First Drive

We've asked our many-layered friend John Krewson to take a spin in the new 2009 Honda Fit. He'll have the full first drive for us tomorrow. In the meantime, here's a taste. — Ed.

It's always been hard for me to find someone who doesn't like the Honda Fit. And what's not to like? It's earned a reputation for being nimble, thrifty, capable, and perhaps most importantly, charismatic. It might not be all that muscular, and it might be just the slightest bit IKEAesque inside, but for about fifteen grand it's hard to think of another subcompact that's quite as, well, friendly to live with. If the Fit were a transformer, it would fold out into a cheerful, helpful little brother with freckles and a turned-up nose.

Hyundai i10 Under Consideration For US Market

Automotive News is reporting that Hyundai is watching the Smart Fourtwo US launch very carefully to see if an adaption of its Indian-built Hyundai i10 would be right for these shores. In its current form, the i10 is little more than an 1,800-pound coffin, but if it were to see US introduction it would get about 400 pounds of extra anti-occupant-smooshing reinforcements. In India, the car gets a whopping 56 MPG, and even with all that extra heft it would still be a high-mileage darling in the four-door micro-car market. [AutoNews via NextAutos]

Commenter Of The Day: Drinking Songs Edition

Before records, radios and iPods, those who didn't have access to sheet music had to get their tunes by hearing them live. This meant that the number of songs available were generally limited, and many ditties were recycled numerous times with different lyrics. As such, many tunes originally started out as drinking songs. For example, a Swedish drinking tune apparently begat a British sea shanty which begat "John Brown's Body," which we now know as "The Battle Of Hymn Of The Republic." Our very own "Star Spangled Banner" is, originally, the old English drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven." We don't have a tune for it, but we have Mad Science to thank for the following Corvette ZR1 First Drive drinking game: More »

Project Car Hell

PCH, Index Of Effluency Edition: MGB-GT or Fiat X1/9?

Welcome to Project Car Hell, where you choose your eternity by selecting the project that's the coolest... and the most hellish! Last time we simultaneously crushed and seared our fingers in the red-hot vise of the Hell Garage, the Shelby-ized Dodge Omni beat hell out of the Shelby-ized Dodge Shadow in the poll. Today, with the New England 24 Hours of LeMons race coming up in just a few days, we're thinking about the kind of car it takes to win the most prestigious trophy of the event. No, that's not the one that goes to the so-called "overall winner" (although a team does get some heavy-duty bragging rights by taking that honor). We're talking about the coveted Index Of Effluency trophy, the one given to the team that achieves beyond all reasonable expectation in a seemingly hopeless "race car." You contend for the IOE by showing up in a looks-fast-on-paper car that everyone knows is going to blow up for sure (e.g., Maserati Biturbo, Merkur XR4Ti, Pontiac Fiero, etc.), or by clattering onto the track in something ungodly slow yet totally lovable (see Tunachuckers) and then keeping that crappy heap on the track for hour after punishing hour. We're going with a mix of both approaches in today's Choose Your Eternity matchup!

Carroll Shelby's First Race Car Up For Auction At Barrett-Jackson

The first car ever raced by legendary motorsports figure Carroll Shelby will go up for sale at the Barrett-Jackson auction this October. The car is a 1949 MG TC that Shelby borrowed for a pair of races in Norman, Oklahoma in 1952 — both of which he won. The TC is still in racing form, powered by a 1250cc four-cylinder engine tuned for 100 horsepower. The BRG MG is not just a rolling piece of history, it's also a reminder of a time when the toughest guy ever to go by Carroll spent as much time driving as he did suing people. Considering that Shelby's GT500 convertible went for $657,000, we think this will be a little out of our league. [AutoWeek]

Piero Taruffi's 1952 Land Speed Record-Breaking Double Bullet

Jalopy Journal has a transcription of an article which ran in a 1952 copy of Mechanix Illustrated detailing the land speed record run of one Piero Taruffi, and his Double Bullet race car. Taruffi's car used a 1.7-liter four-cylinder Maserati engine running a chain drive mounted on one side of the car, with him mounted in the other. All four wheels rode on a longitudinally mounted, fully independent suspension (unlike the cutaway in the gallery used for illustration) and carried Peiro to a crushing world record in the 2-liter class.

Recall On 2008 Honda Element Affects Fewer People Than Will Read This Post

If you have a 2008 Honda Element, don't panic, but your car (or whatever you want to call it) might be subject to a recall issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If you're driving your Element right now, pull over to a safe spot on the side of the road and call 1-800-999-1009 to make sure your car isn't one of the 241 vehicles that might have an improperly welded front bushing bracket on the left trailing arm of the rear suspension. If you are one of the unlucky few, have your vehicle taken (not driven) to a Honda dealership, where it can be inspected and fixed if necessary. [NHTSA via carscoop]

2009 Honda Civic

2009 Honda Civic and 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid Officially Revealed

After those excitingly rendered 2009 Honda Civic scans surfaced yesterday, Honda apparently decided throw some water on the party and debut the real deal today with official press images and information. The 2009 Honda Civic and Civic Hybrid have indeed been updated, but are considerably less exciting than we were hoping for. It took us a bit to figure out what changed between '08 and '09, but from the appearance side of things, the most dramatic difference is the lower bumper — it gets a set of flanking intakes which are probably just for visual interest. Most of the news comes from interior features, including the introduction of a stereo system equipped to play MP3s, some Bluetooth gadgetry and a new stability-control system. Check out the pics and read all about it in the press release below.

Aussie Woman Jailed Over Belief In 'God-Given Right To Drive'

Losalini Rainima (not pictured), a Fiji-born woman living in Australia, is part of an organization called Unified Peoples' Movement Against Road Tolls (UPMART), which believes all laws should be biblically based; those which are not don't have to be obeyed. Rainima was arrested for driving without a license in 2007, normally a offense punished by parole, and has been in jail for the last 10 months as she's refused to sign any manner of plea for parole. You see, signing anything admitting guilt would be validating Australia's secular law, thus conflicting with her God-given right to go forth and drive. More »

2009 Volkswagen CC Priced Under $27,000, First Special Model Released

As we marveled at the 2009 Volkswagen CC running around Monterey, the folks at VW revealed that the sleek four-door coupe will be priced below $27,000 when it goes on sale in the fourth quarter of this year. The announcement was made at the Pebble Beach Concours, making it less than 100th the cost of the Veyron 164 Grand Sport — at least before you start adding options. The company also revealed a special "Gold Coast" edition of the CC, which includes the usual exterior and interior upgrades and the 280 horsepower TSFI engine. Saturn Aura Redline

Saturn Aura Redline Preview: Opel Insignia OPC Testing At Nürburgring

Judging from these shots taken by KGP at the Nürburgring, GM is already working up a high-performance version of the new Opel Insignia. Suspected to be powered by a twin-turbo version of the 2.8-liter V6 found in the standard Insignia, the added boost should up output to at least 300 HP. In Britain, the car will likely be called the Vauxhall Insignia VXR, but the rest of Europe will know it as the Opel Insignia OPC. There's no official word on plans to bring the car stateside as a Saturn Aura Redline, but with the possibility of an AWD system like that on the Saab 9-3 Turbo X, such a car could be an affordable Audi alternative for those of us living in the snowbelt. Customer Satisfaction

U of M Survey Contradicts Others, Claims Fewer Buyers Satisfied With Detroit Automakers

This year's American Customer Satisfaction Index, a study put together by the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, shows that the home state's automakers are losing ground in customer satisfaction to European and Japanese manufacturers. The report shows brands like Buick, Cadillac and Lincoln-Mercury dropping compared to Honda and Lexus — directly contradicting Consumer Reports and JD Power surveys that show American cars on the rise. Though Saturn posted the biggest gain in satisfaction, Chevy posted the biggest loss. It could be that cutbacks are taking their toll; more likely, people are suddenly not so pleased with that Expedition EL now that gas now costs a billion dollars a gallon. Full scores after the jump. Fake Ferrari Wears Porsche Badges On China's Coast

This fake Ferrari doesn't look nearly as bad as some of the abominations we've seen, but this was spotted in China, where they've got plenty of experience making knock-offs. Oddly enough, they've decided to place Porsche badges on the fiberglass bodywork. Stranger yet, this isn't even a functioning vehicle: The car-like object parked along the scenic coastline is merely a prop for a local wedding photography studio. More proof that Ferraris and Porsches are the perfect accessories for posing.
